What Is Product Handle in Shopify?

In Shopify, each product has a unique URL generated based on the product’s title. In addition to the store address, it also includes a part called the “handle.”

The title of your product is Shopify’s default handle. Whatever comes after /product/ in the product URL is the product handle.

So, a Shopify product handle is the last part of the product’s web address that often consists of the product name and is designed to be user-friendly and SEO-friendly. It typically consists of lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, making it easy to read and share.

For example, if you have a product titled “Red T-Shirt”, the handle might be like “red-t-shirt.” This handle is used in the product’s URL, helping customers and search engines navigate the product page.

Where can we find and edit it?

Edit Products Handles In Shopify Admin

1. From your store backend, go to Products > open the product you want to edit

2. Edit product title

3. Scroll down to Search engine listing, click edit icon and change the name here

For example, the product name is 18-karat Gold Big Hoop Diamond and Multisapphire Earrings, and the product’s handle is 18-karat-Gold-Big-Hoop-Diamond-and-Multisapphire-Earrings“

It is changed to 18-karat Gold Big Hoop Silver and URL handle “18-karat-Silver-Big-Hoop-Diamond“

4. Save the product

To confirm the update, click the “View” button and look for the product URL in your web browser’s address bar. The handle should now appear in the URL.

NOTE:

If you change the handle by changing the title, the old product URL will no longer work. Please change any tabs or links pointing to the old URL so your customers understand.
